My 2013 Appearance Goals

I am a very project-oriented person. My life is a series of projects that swing me from one to the next. But, I'm not much of a New Year's Resolution type of person, probably because I burned out on them in my early teens, never able to keep up the "Exercise, eat healthy, journal, keep a spotless room, and keep my fingernail polish chip-less" resolutions for more than the first two weeks of January. Life gets in the way, y'know? In thinking about 2013, I  realized I have no idea what to expect, but I know I need to take responsibility for my own growth, because so far that's the only thing on my agenda for this year.
 One area of my life that could use definite improvement is my wardrobe. It's a wreck, and I would like to straighten it up. So, without further ado, my 5 Appearance Goals for this year:

Yes, I have a lot of clothes. But over my lifetime, I've acquired very few pieces that can be worn over and over without wearing out pathetically soon. I would like to make the best use of fewer pieces, rather than searching through a mountain of rarely-worns trying to find that one item I adore to wear again.
Also in this "quality" idea, I would like to explore my "color season" and begin to mold my wardrobe into that color scheme. Colors that work together so I can have fewer items, but more potential.
This may seem like a no-brainer for some of you, but it's a huge shift in my personal thinking. I've always been more of a quantity, I'll-ignore-the-pilling type of girl.

I used to wear jewelry all the time. Before we moved to TN, I wouldn't leave my room in the morning without a necklace and earrings, at least. (I also wore heels almost every day, but that's a different story) I'm still an always-earrings girl, but I've strayed from putting the effort into a necklace and bracelets. I would like to re-inspire that part of my attire and accessorize more!

Our skin is our biggest organ, and one that I would like to keep in tip-top shape. I know my body is designed to be used and wear and tear will come, but there's no reason not to take proactive care in preventing further scaring or excessive burning. Also, because what I put on my skin will make it into my body, (We have almost 22 square feet of skin!) I'd like to try to keep that stuff natural. Aluminum-free deodorant, natural shampoo, coconut oil instead of Bath and Body Works lotion, charcoal eyeliner, essential oils for acne and scar healing, the list goes on! I'm not super picky, but I would like to make a general move towards less chemicals on my skin. :)

Since I have to be smart about how much I spend on clothing, I would like to support thrift stores and second-hand shops instead of Walmart. Besides funding better causes, thrift stores usually have much better things that are of longer lasting quality, which was my first goal for this year. It might take a little more time, but it'll be worth it for less cookie-cutter clothes and more tried-and-true pieces.

Lastly, I would like to make a greater effort to re-purpose what I already have to make it work for me and my sisters. I have bins and bins of clothes that need redone or turned into something different. I hope 2013 is the year I make use of the things already in my possession and create one-of-a-kind pieces.

So, those are my Appearance Goals for the year. I, of course, would also like to eat better, exercise more, and get more sunshine, but those are more lifestyle goals. ;)

  1. Have you seen the recipes for homemade deodorant with coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot powder or corn starch, and essential oils? It really really does work (I didn't add the essential oils on my last batch and it didn't make any difference on performance). I've always struggled with mainstream deodorants not really doing the job for me, but this stuff...is my deodorant miracle! Just a thought as you move towards fewer chemicals in your beauty regimine.

  2. I agree with all of these! (although I had to snicker just a BIT on the 'finger nails never chipped'-mine needed to be taken off 3 days ago...)

    I'm really bad about wearing jewelry as well! I have a ton, just don't wear it very often!

    I've started a new routine of washing my face with honey in the morning and olive oil at night-my skin looks so much healthier now! I notice too if I stop cleaning and taking care of it, I breakout horribly! Also, be careful about coconut oil (especially on the face) some people say it won't clog pores, some say it will-my experience has been (at least for my face) that it was way too oily to use.

    THRIFT stores-yeah! Love them! Although I have to say that I find the best stuff out of town-if you have a Plato's closet you should go! I wish they had some in Montana, but alas...no. Nearest one is in Spokane WA-don't make that trip very often!

    1. Ooo honey facewash sounds divine! I really should take the time to wash my face more often.
      Thankfully, I'm one of those weird people who do fine with a light brushing of coconut oil on my face, but I appreciate the warning!
      I'm definitely going to head to Plato's Closet next time I'm in town- apparently there's one right near where we shop for groceries. :)

Oh i love all these. such great ideas. for my appearance resolutions.. it mostly consists of not wearing sweats or yoga pants 24/7. i kid. sorta. i want to start being more confident with my style. wear my hair in styles other then down, french braids and messy buns. oh and i want to smile more :) xx | natalia.

  5. Those are some really good goals, and I can definitely late to them! Especially the idea of buying clothes of higher quality than can be worn more than a couple times, and that are also versatile and can be worn in more than one or two ways. I'm also trying to be a bit more natural with what I put on my skin, straying away from parabens especially. It's tricky when the products I want are two times more expensive than what is basically the same product, but with the unwanted additives.

    Setting appearance/wardrobe goals is a great idea! I never thought of that! Do you set goals for other areas of your life? I tend to be project oriented too! I wish I was more though! I just can't seem to think of projects to work on! Suggestions? I guess my wardrobe goals are first, to lose weight. That's not really a new goal though! I would like to weigh no more than 120 lb by the end of May and I want to have a thigh gap! After I lose the weight I want to buy/sew some wardrobe staples and classic pieces! I don't think I really changed to much this past year!

  8. Thanks for sharing these inspiring 'appearence' goals with us!! :) they gave me some ideas for my own personal 'wardrobe re-vamping' for this year! ;)
    The biggest thing in 2012 I changed in my 'appearence' would be changing from a '50/50 pants n skirts gal' to about a 99% skirt wearing girl, after really considering my wardrobe, and being convicted that I really could not be as modest as I felt the Lord would have me be while wearing pants! :)
    For this year I would like to focus on getting rid of anything that I don't really wear, and making sure the articles I do have colour coordinate and the styles are complimentry... and get rid of anything that doesn't fit the mold! :D

    1. Wow, that pants-to-skirt change is something to be excited about! My sister did that when she was 12ish I believe and it really changed who she was as a person- definitely for the better! God was so good.

    Very inspiring! I'm so glad to see another girl trying to put more effort into her appearance (not that you don't already do an amazing job!)
    Let me just say, that thrifting has to be one of the funnest things! I really and truly encourage you in your goal in this, as my sisters and I find the majority of our clothes from such stores.

  10. 1- dress a little more 'adultish' (I am possibly to girly for my age [young adult] -sniff!) but not turn boring (that is why I really like your blog... for you creativity :) which I lack when needed)
    2- wear more hats (I have a lot & they deserve more use:)
    3- learn how to wear belts again (love my western ones but have not worn them for about 2 years since wearing skirts all the time {which don't have belt loops}
    4- Try to have some skill at eye liner (most uncoordinated person at anything done looking in a mirror!)
    5- Refashioning clothing has always been a dream of mine! (Sadly, I do not have any sewing friends to save something when I mess it up!)

  11. I was thinking about this myself and i would like to going through my closet and re-think what i wear and don't wear. Because lately i have looked really sloppy and i would also like to get some of my pintrest idea into my closet(e.i sew)

  12. Wow. This was a lot in line with what I have wanted to do. I never really fully made out a resolution list-I had some scribbles with general health, beauty, and appearance stuff. I use primarily natural/organic beauty stuff, but I have a tendency to get colors that look terrible on me especially since it is harder to find stuff in stores. I also can be hit and miss with clothes and outfits. I love all this categories that you touched on and cannot wait to see how you work on them! Oh, and I loved "Color Me Beautiful"-I am a Summer and I adore all my colors. There is also a different color theory in "Good Girls Don't Have to Dress Bad" which also has helpful fashion ideas period and is written from a Christian perspective. The author's site is here: http://www.sharibraendel.com/ I prefer the color theory in the first book although I don't adhere to it strictly, but I adored the 16 point checklist for accessory/overall appearance help.

    1. Hey Kaelyn! Here are some natural "recipes" I have found to work really good for acne. Some of which include essential oils.

      Night treatments:
      Mix 5-10 drops Tea Tree oil+1/4 tsp Jojoba oil in the palm of you hand and apply on face before bed - Warning: it makes your hair really oily. but if you take a shower every morning it shouldn't be a problem. (I tend to like taking showers at night so it was kind of a problem for me ) The Tea tree Oil has GREAT Anti-bacterial properties and the Jojoba oil is VERY close to the sebum that your skin makes which, when there is an overabundance can clog your pores and cause acne. The Jojoba oil not only dilutes the TTO but it also kind of "tricks" your skin and your body will not produce as much sebum and therefore you will not have as much acne

      5-10 drops Tea Tree oil + Apple Cider Vinegar on cotton swab and rub over face. It will sting but this works really well. The ACV dries out the acne as well as dilutes the TTO.

      I try to use one of these treatments every night even when I don't have an acne breakout because they help prevent it as well. The TTO+ Jojoba Oil would probably be the better of the two to use when just maintaining because the TTO+ACV can tend to dry your skin out.

      Day treatments:

      Honey face mask. Rub about 1/2 Teaspoon honey into your skin and leave to set for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water (cold doesn't wash it off that well) and when all washed off splash skin with COLD water and pat dry with hand. - The cold water puts the moisture back in your skin that the warm water just took out and contracts your skin as well. The honey not only has amazing anti-bacterial properties, but it also aids in healing, and if I am not mistaken will help to prevent scarring. This is awesome! I have been doing this almost every day for 2 weeks and it has done wonders for my skin!

      Lemon Juice and Baking Soda scrub. Mix some baking soda and lemon juice in the palm of your hand and GENTLY rub on your face. Rinse with COLD water. The lemon juice will help with getting rid of the acne and the baking soda will remove dead skin cells that could block your pores and thus cause more acne.

      I think I have also heard that Lavender Oil is effective for healing acne but personally have never tried using it. Recently I have also been trying to limit my sugar intake and I have found that this has helped my skin as well. I always know when I have eaten too much sugar because my skin gets really bad. I am sure you have heard this next one as well but drink LOTS of water. This is something that I personally struggle with but when I do do it it certainly helps! Don't know if you wear make up or not, but it can also clog your pores and so while you are trying to get rid of the acne it probably would be best to skip the make up.

      This is probably a longer list than you wanted but I hope you can find something that works for you. 2 years ago I had REALLy bad acne. For a while I just ignored it, in the way of not doing anything about it, but finally decided I had to do something about it and have ever since been trying out natural ways to get rid of it and maintain my skin. I have found that it works best to rotate the different "recipes" i.e. do one of the nights treatments every night for a couple weeks then do the other for a couple etc.

    3. Your very welcome! I also thought of one more thing that I have found to work really good. Egg white applied to the face and then left to dry, oh, about 10 -15 min. works amazing! Rinse off with warm water and then splash your face with cold. Now that may sound somewhat strange, and I will admit I was skeptical before I tried it, but after I did I was so glad I had (as strange as it sounds). The egg white works really good to dry out the acne without really drying out your skin. Be forewarned though: if you have lots of siblings (like I do) be prepared for some strange comments from them... that is if you are brave enough to leave the bathroom with it on your face!:) lol.

  15. i will admit that I'm a little project oriented too, and I think all of these goals are great! I might have to steal them for myself. But could you please tell me what's in the Bath and Body Works lotions that aren't really good for your skin? Also, is there a healthy alternative out there that smells just a good? Because I absolutely love their "Sweet Pea" scented lotion.
    Oh, and what would you consider to be wardrobe staples? I just know you're going to say a denim skirt! But do you have any other suggestions?

      As far as a good-smelling alternative, I haven't found one. Crabtree and Evelyn does have more natural ingredients (and imo way better smells), but I think their lotions still have some chemicals. If I want a totally natural good-smelling moisturizer, I drop some essential oils into coconut oil and rub that on.
      I'll be thinking about a wardrobe staples list. That's something that varies so much for each person so it's hard to sum up.

  16. A note on the deodorant... My family uses Young Living's essential oils natural deodorant and it works really well for all of us. My family is really active and spend a lot of time in the various barns on our farm and this is what works for us. It's a little pricey but we love it.

Wow, those are great goals...As far as appearance, my only goal is to exercice more and eat well (I'm not a junk food eater kind of girl, but I have a strong tendency to eat a bit too much because I love food...) to loose the last 10 pounds that bother (I had 20 to loose and starting on November 1st of 2012 I got into exercising every morning, drinking more water, etc so I'm now halfway there...) And then, I'll see what I'll be able to do and I'll probably have some sewing to do since most of my skirts are already getting too big ;-)
    Thanks for sharing, it's inspiring but I didn't think about this topic until I read your post...Soooo...I guess I now have 1 full year to think about realistic and do-able appearance goals for 2014 !

  19. Hi, it's me, Danielle! Your appeareance goals are kinda like mine. I don't wear earrings, but I'm looking for more skirts(Sally Ann, Free Store with my mom), you know, ruffled, sort've frilly, comfortable, but cute skirts to wear. I like skirts that hand below the knee, but hand halfway down the calf or so. I'm still a little shy of wearing skirts in town, but at home, well, I'm at home with them! Mom and I are looking more natural ways to care for hair and skin. Have a great day!

  20. I love your goals for this year, especially Quality over Quantity. That is one I'd like to work on this year as well as dressing better. I've gotten into the habit of wearing the same thing everyday and it gets rather boring. I'd also like to start sewing my clothes as well.

  22. great goals! thanks for sharing.:) i've just started using coconut oil as a moisturizer and have gotten into essential oils as well. i've found a great blog loaded with info on natural living that I love. she's called wellnessmama if you want to look her up and she has lots of natural beauty recipes like deodorant, lip stick, lotions, teeth whiteners, oil facial cleansers, etc.
    thank you for the time you put into your blog!I found it after I decided I wanted to dress more modestly and feminine, using more skirts than pants, and I have gotten lots of great ideas for my new look! thank you for the inspiration and encouragement. :)
