Awk+Awe | My Mom!

Hey y'all! Hope you've had a lovely week. My mother kindly agreed to let me share her outfit with y'all today! I have gotten requests for fashion inspiration for those who may not be in the same stage of life as I am currently, so I thought you might like to see my beautiful mom!

Awkward:
  • Cooking bacon in your hotel room and everyone who walks past asking about the glorious smell. :P
  • Laughing so hard you can't finish your sentence when it really wasn't funny at all.
  • The 8 minute period of time when your coffee finally kicks in but before it mellows out. Without fail you end up dancing and singing uncontrollably for those few moments.
  • Having to get up in the middle of Bible study to take allergy medicine because it's spring AND they have cats.
  • Texting who you thought was your friend inviting them to dinner, but instead texting their old number. When the new owner texts back about the mix-up, you get to talking about what you had for dinner and end up sending them a roll recipe, not having any clue who this new person is. :P
  • Involuntarily screaming every time you hear someone squash a bug. Makes you cringe.
  • Your pattern maker's shippers getting mixed up! I got a roll of children's patterns back instead of my skirt pattern! Sooo yet another little delay while I wait for the actual pattern to arrive. ;)
  • How many times a day you shower in allergy season. There might have been a day this week I showered every 6 hours. :P
  • Losing your cooking skills. My sister has been in charge of making breakfast and dinner for the last year or two, so when her lymes medicine put her in bed with nausea starting last week (did I mention 6/8 of us are now dealing with it?), I had to take over cooking again. FINALLY meals are starting to get better, but it's been a funky learning curve as I practice. I've always thought I was a fine enough cook, but apparently not. :P
  • Not being able to decide which pair of silver shoes you like better online, so you order them both.
  • When there's so much you want to talk about with someone that you don't know where to start.
  • Using candy shooters to pelt candy into your friends' mouths.
  • Receiving a hot pad in my bag of "goodies" from the bank when I opened Fresh Apparel's bank account (!!!).

Awesome:
  • The response to yesterday's post, the introduction to the Let's Talk series. Things keep going through my head to share with y'all.
  • This quote: "I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day." - E. B. White
  • Whole hog roasts! Our neighbors are awesome and built themselves a pig roaster and then raised a pig and cooked it for our whole church! It was a gorgeous day with lovely fellowship and could not have been yummier BBQ.
  • Getting back into running a little bit. I don't take my energy level for granted anymore.
  • Being able to lay in bed and look up quotes on my phone. Google's given me so many gems this week. Just love carefully chosen words. Like this, "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value."~ Albert Einstein
  • Potato planting parties at our friends' farm! Love feeling the freshly tilled dirt between my toes and getting a sunburn!
  • My little brother loving his new clothes from thredUP so much that he wore all 4 shirts at the same time... all...day...long...
  • Scrolling through Pinterest laughing at jokes.
  • Mayonnaise. Seriously, I love that stuff.
  • Spending all of Sunday afternoon and evening exhausted from the powerful, incredible sermon your pastor preached during the morning.
  • Being blessed by friendships with people from different walks of life who can give different perspectives and encouragement to you. Never underestimate the power of simply asking someone, "You doing alright?" with sincerity. Caring eye contact is an amazing thing.

Doesn't my mom look lovely? This is just an outfit she put on for wearing around the house today. This skirt is one of her favorites and she gets compliments on it from complete strangers all the time!

  3. Beautiful outfit! I can clearly see where you get your great sense of style! Just out of curiosity, where you raised dressing modestly like this, or did you decide this is how you want to honor The Lord on your own? I've said this before, you are just such a wonderful inspiration and person, and I know you must be busy with many different things, so thank you for taking the time to run this blog! So encouraging!

  16. Your mom is lovely! And has great fashion sense :)

One totally hilarious awkward thing that happened to me today was as I was driving home from school. Someone decided to plant a soda can right in the middle of the road--right side up. My hypothesis is that they were planning on seeing how long it took before a car barreled into it :) I steered around it, of course,

  19. Your mother is indeed beautiful!

    Awkward:
-Driving in a van full of food with one of the seat benches removed and the cupcakes you made sliding to the side and falling out at a sudden turn, then having to sit unfastened and hold the tray in place so the aforementioned problem wouldn't occur again.
-When your father tries to engage you in a conversation about which Jane Austen novel you're reading while walking down the full-of-people Walmart aisles.
-Getting used to running in front of various neighbors. Boy is it worth it to get the exercise, but it can be uncomfortable to get used to.

    Awesome:
    -Movie afternoons with friends.
-70 degree and sunny weather sometimes finally!
-Running a mile every day. Feels amazing.
-The anticipation of Easter and seeing many relatives after six months of not being able to!
-Eight hours of spending time laughing, talking, jumping, dancing, singing, and goofing around with many different friends, and strengthening those friendships.
    -Making cupcakes.
-Being blessed with good duties, hobbies, and occupations to keep myself busy, purposeful, and content.
-Seeing the power of prayer through the healing of a friend who couldn't use her legs for a long time, and, through the prayers of many, is now almost fully recovered!
-Finally submitting the poem I wrote about the seasons for a contest to go on the back of our homeschooling group's Yearbook.
-Fresh clothes from the clearance section at Kohl's. I love the comfort of my new Patriots sweatshirt.
-After a while of hoping to get one, finding a white denim jacket on ThredUp for a total of $7 and loving it upon receiving it in the mail :) Thanks for bringing them to my attention!
-The innocence, simplicity and sweetness, yet intelligence of young ones.
-When your favorite song comes on Pandora.

I had to smile at the mayonnaise one, since I love it too, but have siblings who loathe it!

  20. Your mother doesn't look much older than you or your sister, Emma. And to think she has a daughter in her twenties!

Is the patch skirt sewed by you or someone else?

    1. My mom is very flattered! :) No, it's not home made. The fabric is printed with all those squares. It's a super old skirt, from what we can tell. :P

  23. Hey I used to have TERRIBLE allergies like you do, Olivia, and I know what it's like to take showers all the time (ugh!). I started allergy shots and now I never really have to take any allergy meds at all. You just go in for a shot every week and then eventually every couple weeks for about five years. Have you ever considered getting these shots? I feel like it would free up a lot of your time. ;)

    1. I have bad allergies, too, but I haven't considered shots.
      1) I don't like shots(I'm afraid of pain)!
      2) There are things in the shots I don't want in my blood.
      3) Our world is cursed….sickness and allergies come with it. It's life!!!

    2. Hey, Sara!

Allergy shots really don't hurt at all, but what is in the shots that you don't want in your blood? I've never heard anything about that and I'm curious. This world is definitely cursed! All the more reason to stay as healthy as we can. If you think about it, not having to rely on showers and tons of meds and drops when going outside can help free us to serve God wherever He calls us.

  35. That's cool about roasting a whole pig! I wonder if you know Renee Stokes? I met her while working for the ministry "Above Rubies" there in Tennessee, and I just saw pictures on her facebook of a whole pig roast, so was wondering if there was some connection! My sister is also battling Lyme's disease and gets nauseous from the medicine. Love your blog!
